iOS app icon generator

Turn one image into an Xcode-ready AppIcon.appiconset: a single 1024px icon for Xcode 14+, optional iOS 18 dark and tinted variants, or every legacy size. Always opaque, so App Store Connect accepts it.

How iOS app icons work

iOS shows your icon on the home screen, in Spotlight, Settings, notifications and the App Store. Since Xcode 14 the asset catalog only needs a single 1024×1024px image and Xcode renders the smaller sizes at build time. The icon must be a square, opaque PNG without rounded corners: iOS applies its own continuous-corner mask.

iOS 18 added two optional appearances. The dark icon has a transparent background so the system can place it on a dark gradient, and the tinted icon is grayscale so iOS can color it with the user's tint.

Add the icon in Xcode

  1. Open Assets.xcassets (React Native: ios/YourApp/Images.xcassets).
  2. Replace the contents of AppIcon.appiconset with the files from the ZIP, or delete the old set and drag the new one in.
  3. In the target's General tab, check that App Icon is set to AppIcon.
  4. Delete the app from the simulator and run it again to clear the cached icon.

The single-size Contents.json with dark and tinted variants looks like this:

Frequently asked questions

What size should an iOS app icon be?+

Since Xcode 14 you only need one 1024x1024px image; Xcode creates every smaller size when it builds the app. Older projects can use the full set of 20, 29, 40, 60, 76 and 83.5pt icons at 1x, 2x and 3x plus the 1024px App Store icon.

Why does App Store Connect reject my icon?+

The most common reason is transparency: the App Store icon can't contain transparent pixels. SquareOne always renders iOS icons on your background color, so they are opaque. Also don't round the corners yourself; iOS applies the mask.

How do iOS 18 dark and tinted icons work?+

In Xcode 16 the AppIcon set can contain a dark variant with a transparent background (iOS draws its own dark gradient behind it) and a grayscale tinted variant that iOS colors with the user's tint. SquareOne adds both to the same Contents.json.

Why does my app still show the old icon?+

The simulator and devices cache app icons. Delete the app, clean the build folder in Xcode (Shift+Cmd+K) and run it again.
