How Flutter app icons work

A Flutter app has native android and ios folders with their own icons. The flutter_launcher_icons package generates them from a few source images and a config, so you never resize anything by hand.

Set it up

  1. Copy flutter/assets/icon from the ZIP into assets/icon.
  2. Copy flutter_launcher_icons.yaml next to pubspec.yaml.
  3. Add the package and generate the icons:

Frequently asked questions

What does SquareOne generate for Flutter?+

Source images in assets/icon (icon, adaptive foreground, monochrome and optional iOS dark/tinted) and a flutter_launcher_icons.yaml that points to them. flutter_launcher_icons then writes the native Android and iOS icons.

Why remove_alpha_ios?+

App Store Connect rejects transparent app icons. SquareOne's icon is already opaque, and remove_alpha_ios makes flutter_launcher_icons strip the alpha channel too.

Which flutter_launcher_icons version do I need?+

0.14.2 or newer. The monochrome (themed) icon and the iOS 18 dark and tinted keys arrived in 0.14.0, and 0.14.2 fixed where the dark and tinted images are written. flutter pub add installs the latest version.

Do I need to rerun the command after changing the icon?+

Yes. Replace the images in assets/icon and run dart run flutter_launcher_icons again.
